I read Eric Sloane books with fondness and a bit of sadness. With the passing of time means more and more ways and stories of the past are lost. What will the young do?

You will learn about and appreciate wood more than ever before. I last bought this book 45 years ago....
If you love wood, in all forms, from the tree to wood based products (barns, tools, etc) this is a wonderful book with lots of rich history and details that we seem to lose over time. the illustrations are excellent. We purchased this for my dad the woodworker, but I loved reading it before and after we gave it to him.
I bought this book thinking that it would make a nice reference book with hand drawn illustrations. Boy was I surprised when I started reading it. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. I read the whole book in one night and then immediately started recommending it to friends and family. Everyone I loaned it out to loved it. I love how the anecdotes really give you a feeling on who the author really is.Reading this book will make you feel like you just spent a few days talking with your grandfather about "the good old days."
