Fighter Pilot: The Memoirs of Legendary Ace Robin Olds, by Christina Olds Robin Olds

Robin Olds was many things to many people. To his West Point football coach he was an All American destined for the National College Football Hall of Fame. To his P-38 and P-51 wartime squadrons in WWII he was the aggressive fighter pilot who made double ace and became their commander in nine short months. For the pioneers of the jet age, he was the wingman on the first jet demo team, a racer in the Thompson Trophy race, and the only U.S. exchange officer to command an RAF squadron. In the tabloid press he was the dashing flying hero who married the glamorous movie star. For the current crop of fighter pilots he is best known as the leader of the F-4 Wolfpack battling over North Vietnam. For cadets at the Air Force Academy he was a role model and mentor. He was all of those things and more. Here's Robin's story in his own words and gleaned from the family and friends of his lifetime. Here's the talent and learning, the passion and leadership, the love and disappointments of his life. Few men have written on the tablets of aviation history with such a broad and indelible brush. Olds was a classic hero with vices as well as virtues, a life writ large that impacted many.

I had fully expected a great Sierra Hotel book full of combat engagements from a triple-ace, but this memoir is more. Much more. Perhaps the most striking revelation is Robin's incredible sense of loyalty. When Scat Davis, his best friend at West Point, couldn't qualify medically for a pilot slot, Robin offered to take him into vicarious combat by naming his planes (every one of them) "Scat". When his friend Karl Richter was killed in Southeast Asia, he adopted Karl's pet monkey. When the Air Force tasked his wing to fly nuclear one-way missions in Europe in the event of hostilities, he said he would lead the strike force, even though he abhorred the use of nuclear weapons.Even though I have experience in the F-4C, D and E, I learned a lot. For example, I had been unaware of the problems in mating AIM-9 missiles to the D model when it was initially sent to Southeast Asia. Robin dealt with that and made it work.Every fighter pilot is aware of Operation Bolo, but this book gives real insight into everything that went into the planning and execution, and leaves those of us wingmen (who simply put the light on the star) in awe. And every fighter pilot has heard about Robin's entrance into the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, and how he totally transformed morale in record time. The 8th still proudly calls itself the Wolfpack, the appellation Robin created. If you're a fighter pilot, you need to read this book. If you're not aa fighter pilot, you really need to read this book.

Sure, Robin Olds was the archetypical fighter jock. He had the skill, the guts, the style and the swagger, in spades. Son of a fighter pilot, friend of military aviation pioneers, combat leader whose men would, and did, follow him through hell, husband to a movie star. But what I learned from this book that impressed me much more was what a real gentleman he was, and by gentleman, I mean a man who cares deeply about other people. Whether it was the troops serving under him, the British people suffering wartime danger and postwar privation, military dependents stuck on an airplane on the tarmac for hours, or his beloved Air Force Academy cadets, his sensitivity and compassion and love for others shines through. This book is many things - a hilarious, rollicking good fighter pilot yarn, a seminar in leadership, an study of what was wrong, and right, with the Air Force and the air war over Norh Vietnam, and an exploration, sometimes painful, of what it means to be a complete man. Highly recommended.

The great story of Air Force Brigadier General Robin Olds. Beginning in his childhood home where his dad introduced him to his famous pilot friends like Eddie Rickenbacker, to the Military Academy at Westpoint, to becoming a WWII Ace flying P-38's and P-51's, to the skies over North Vietnam flying an F-4, and finally as the Commandant of the US Air Force Academy. He was beloved for his humor and leadership. He led his Wing over North Vietnam from the front, not from a desk. His new tactics cut our aircraft losses in half and saved many American lives. A true American hero, this is a great book that not only tells of great flying and boisterous Officer's Club parties, it also tells of his leadership. His large handlebar mustache became famous as his way of flipping the bird to the Pentagon's arm-chair Generals. His first day as the Air Force Academy Commandant had all of the Cadets wearing fake cardboard handlebar mustaches as a big welcome. Everyone loved him, I expect you'll love his book too.

Met Robbin Olds in England when he was in charge of the 81st TFW.They don't make leaders like that anymore.I arrived in SEA at the 8th TFW just after he left.He had everyone juiced up to the max, and the crews and maintenance folks giving 110% to get the mission done.It was a privilege to meet him.The man, the legend, lives on.....

First of all, I hope Chris is able to see this comment...and I offer my condolences at the loss of a remarkable man.I really enjoyed this book. I was so very sad to read that his wife was not much of a support to him but instead, very much focused on her own social circle and career. How unfortunate.I know some have posted negative reviews ("He's not that special") and that just strikes me as extremely petty. It's clear from what I have read about the man, in this book and elsewhere, that he inspired his men and they would do anything for him. He inspired a deep sense of duty and cared about those that served under him. During those hard times in Vietnam, I am sure that sort of spirit was hard to muster for some squadrons. Some sections of the book were a little dry, especially his tenure at the Pentagon. However it's still well worth reading since that explains his many frustrations with the system, which he goes into great detail elaborating on.This book ranks up there with Chuck Yeager's book and Bob Hoover's....amazing reads for aviation fans.

The book is the autobiography of fighter ace and legendary pilot, General Robin Olds, as told by himself and edited together after his death by his daughter Christina and friend and author Ed Rasimus. For a synopsis of the book and its content, please refer to the most helpful customer review.Personally, I believe that by not completing his memoirs in time before his death, what could have been a truly outstanding addition to any aviation-related library instead turned out to be a very interesting book that clearly shows that is the result of stitching together written pieces but mostly lacks a true coherent structure. The book shines and excels when Robin has the pen in his hand and he is writing as he would be talking, and we get a glimpse into this huge personality. His legend status (at least amongst fellow pilots and fighters) is well deserved, as will be readily apparent after finishing the book. This is definitely a recommended read for any aviation enthusiast, and as such I rate it 4 stars.
